A Lament for Austria, Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Hapsburg Dynasty, on the Centennial of the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Vienna in particular and Austria in general stood for all that was great and Glorious in Western European history and culture, for at least 400 years, and the Hapsburg Dynasty constituted the third most stable institution in Europe after the Vatican and English Monarchy for three quarters of a millennium. The demise of Austria, which began with the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife on 28 June 1914, not only ushered in the Great War (World War I) of 1914-1918, but the decadence and decline of the 20th century, by contrast with the Apogee and Zenith of Western European Civilization achieved in Europe in the late 19th Century and enjoyed for exactly 14 years in the 20th. To cry for Austria is to cry for the Decline of the West and the beginning of the Brave New World. Was it all planned? If so by whom? Continue reading
